Thank You to the Encaustic Art Institute for ARTsmart Benefit
The Encaustic Art Institute hosted a lovely evening of food and libation and a silent auction of photography and art collected by Guy Cross, founder and retired publisher of THE magazine. There were photos of all kinds including famous rockers and Santa Fe celebrities, sculptures, drawings, assemblages, and paintings. Proceeds from the event will benefit both the Museum’s children’s art education center and ARTsmart.
We want to thank Douglas Mehrens, MoEA founder and artist for this opportunity and for his continued support of ARTsmart. The auction exhibition and permanent collection will remain open through December 17th.
ARTsmart to Participate in 2017 Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival
Wait… Don’t throw that away yet! We can make art with it! Repurpose, reuse, recycle, upcycle –however you want to call it, the amazing Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival returns to the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on November 17-19. The country’s largest and oldest recycled art market showcases art created from discarded materials –all art consists of a minimum of 75% recycled materials. See the Trash Fashion and Costume Contest on Friday night, shop the booths in the art market Saturday and Sunday, and enjoy the juried art exhibits created by students.
ARTsmart’s after-school ARTclub students from Sweeney Elementary have recycled the famous 1970’s environmental campaign Give a Hoot Don’t Pollute and created their own take on Woodsy the Owl by repurposing old CDs, jar lids, bottle caps, buttons, and vintage jewelry. These adorable owl ornaments will be on display throughout the show. As a part of the juried exhibition, ARTsmart has won top three in our age category each year. Please give a hoot –and come take a look! There will be art-making activities for the family, gallery-worthy exhibits and perfect gifts. Tickets for the fashion show on Friday night are $5 and can be purchased at ticketssantafe. Saturday and Sunday’s art show is FREE.
Visiting Artist Program Making a Difference in SFPS Classrooms
ARTsmart’s Visiting Artist program is underway with Issa “Artoonist” Nyaphaga. He’s not only a cartoonist and multimedia artist living and working here in Santa Fe, but he’s also a human rights activist from Cameroon. Convinced that the power of art can save lives he is sharing his talents by mentoring El Camino Real elementary school students in John St. Peter’s art class. He is shown here with a cartoon he created with students being transferred to canvas.
Artists’ Statement “I use art to heal myself and others; because art really cures and can transform a broken human being into a new rebirthed soulful individual. I’m painting cartoons on canvas to bring a sense of humor in the drama with my critical vision of Global Peaceful Society.”
Double Your Gratitude on #GivingTuesday
“I am grateful for art,” a 4th grader at Abiquiu Elementary School told us about her ARTreach class. ARTsmart is grateful for Aleta Pippin/Pippin Contemporary, who stepped up to the plate to match the first $5,000 in donations on #GivingTuesdayNM. Join the global giving movement and truly celebrate the reason for the season by donating to ARTsmart on November 28th. For your convenience online donations will be accepted and matched from Tuesday November 21 to Thursday December 30. Please donate HERE.
Meet the Artist: Kaylie
Kaylie loves to paint and color. She thinks her 2nd grade ARTsmart ARTreach class is fun and loves “all the art we do” in various media. She may have been a little shy when being interviewed but you can see how she shines with pride as she holds up her painting.
