Flooding Update: Renovations Underway at ARTsmart Community Studio
After the storm that damaged much of ARTsmart’s Community Studio (ACS) on Monday, July 23, the ARTsmart board and staff are looking forward to renovating the building and are currently comparing bids from contractors. Though ACS is still closed and staff is working from home or other temporary offices, programming and business are ongoing.
What you can do to help: ARTsmart is raising funds for expenses associated with restoring or replacing items lost, which would allow us to reopen the Community Studio. Your contribution will help us greatly. We have set up a gofundme.com campaign or you can simply click the blue donation button at the top right hand of your screen. ARTsmart does not have space to collect or store any in-kind donations of art supplies, furniture, or books at this time, but we will gratefully accept them in the future. Thank you to everyone in our community who has reached out to us in our time of need.
Kaitlyn Luck Joins ARTsmart Board of Directors
Kaitlyn Luck is an attorney at Montgomery & Andrews, P.A. and ARTsmart’s newest member of the Board of Directors. She says, “I’m excited for the opportunity to join the Board of ARTsmart. I was always fortunate to have been given art classes from a young age and I feel strongly about the importance of art in a child’s development. One of my favorite things about art is that there is something for everyone. I hope that together we can get one step closer to ensuring art for all of our children. As a part of ARTsmart, I’d like to create and encourage more collaborations with younger artists who are either just getting started or relocating to the Santa Fe area, as they are the future of the community and have a lot to offer by enriching the culture.”
Luck is a native Texan and has always been drawn to New Mexico, from its mountains to its art. She graduated from Texas State University and also attended Texas Tech University where she earned her J.D. She has worked in both civil and criminal litigation, and practices civil litigation and administrative law at Montgomery & Andrews, P.A., in Santa Fe. Luck currently serves as a Commissioner of the New Mexico Commission on Access to Justice, and as the Program Director for the New Mexico Young Lawyers Division’s Homeless Legal Clinics. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and snowboarding. Welcome aboard, Kaitlyn!
Fall ARTsmart Programming in Full Swing – Come See for Yourself
As flooding compromised the studios and classrooms at ARTsmart and renovation is taking place, all off-site programming is thriving. ARTsmart instructors head out to ARTreach and ARTclub programming at area elementary schools, taking needed art materials and supplies with them.
ARTreach is a weekly semester-based, arts-learning program held during the school day and serves K-6th grade children in Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties, which include a high ratio of low-income, at-risk, and highly underserved students. ARTclub is a weekly after-school art program for K-6th grade students at selected Santa Fe public elementary schools. This academic year, ARTsmart is excited to train and create with young artists at the following elementary schools in Rio Arriba County: Alcalde, Abiquiu, Dixon, ETS Fairview, Los Niños Kindergarten, San Juan, and Hernandez Elementary.
ARTsmart Program Director Rebecca Chornenky says, “Fall is such a thrilling time of year as we begin workshops with the brilliant budding artists and critical thinkers in Española, Abiquiu, and Dixon ARTreach programs. Seeing their creations is such a gift and an inspiration. The instructors are bringing in new inspirations, tools, lessons, materials, and artists to study—it’s going to be a magical year. Stay tuned and expect to be moved!”
You can come visit an ARTreach class and delight in the contagious enthusiasm connected to making art. Students are currently exploring patterns in radial symmetry creating colorful and bold mandalas with watercolor. ARTsmart classes have gotten off to a successful start with students in both Santa Fe and Espanola public schools attending art classes with instructors Vanessa Gonzalez and Melinda Baker. Artists at Sweeney Elementary, shown here, spent their first three weeks revisiting abstract explorations of line and shape with oil pastels on contrasting black paper.
In the tradition of ARTreach classes, children brainstorm about ideas, learn about artists, materials and techniques while being encouraged to discover the magical creative process for themselves. We can’t wait to see the amazing creativity they will share with us this year! If you would like more information about visiting an ARTreach or ARTclub class, please email a request to Rebecca: email@example.com
Meet the Artist: Mikkey, Age 5
Meet Mikkey, a five-year-old artist in our after-school ARTclub program. After his first ARTsmart class a few weeks ago, Mikkey is one of our biggest fans and always arrives early to help set up. He loves using bright colors and says pairing is his favorite medium. His enthusiasm adds a special sparkle to the group. Mikkey also makes a big effort to be part of the clean up crew, which is always appreciated.
