13 MAY 2010.  Martine Bertin-Peterson, vice president of ARTsmart, a 50lc3 organization, announced the recipients of ARTsmart’s 2010 scholarships. “This is the fifth year ARTsmart has awarded the $4,000 Art Changes Lives scholarship to a Santa Fe student who will be pursuing the fine arts in college,” Bertin-Peterson said. “Rebekah Birken, a senior at Santa Fe High School, readily won the approval of this year’s distinguished panel of judges. We also elected to disburse the $250 Envisioning the Future stipend for books and materials to Christopher Montoya, also a Santa Fe High School senior. Both students studied art under SFHS teacher Lori R. Andrews.”

The ARTsmart and Santa Fe Gallery Association Scholarship was initiated in 2007 and is currently under endowment at the Santa Fe Community Foundation. The selection committee included Bertin-Peterson, owner of The Peterson-Cody Gallery, and the following individuals:

Eileen Braziel, owner of Eileen Brazil Fine Art
Christi Hield, Managing Director, Santa Fe Gallery Association
Jackie M, Director of Education & Public Programs, O’Keeffe Museum
Jennifer Marshall, Principal, Marshall Plan Public Relations

Birken will be attending New York University’s Department of Arts & Art Professions in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Both a painter and sculptor/welder, her artworks have been included in ARTsmart’s 2010 Many Perspectives student art program working with SFHS teacher Al Trujillo. “I am inspired by the groundbreaking work of artists such as Andy Warhol,” Birken has written. “Although I may not understand his work, I know that to be an artist is to be controversial and inspire thought. My artistic influences are those who challenged conventional art at the time, such as Keith Haring. One day I would like to be remembered, at least by a few, as someone who wasn’t afraid to go outside conventional streams of thought to accomplish her goals.” (left: Final Bow by Rebekah Birken)

Montoya plans to attend the art education program at the University of New Mexico. Along with Birken, his paintings were included in the May 10-21, 2010, Cycles of Times: Santa Fe High School Art Show, at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.
