For over 15 years, all fifth-grade SFPS students explore design with their art teachers and create artworks for ARTsmart’s annual Children’s Painted Plate Project. The ARTsmart Board selects approximately 100 students’ designs for reproduction on kiln-fired ceramics. Students work with ARTsmart staff and volunteers during painting sessions to paint their designs. Each student creates two objects—one to keep and auctioned to raise funds for our Visiting Artist Program. ARTsmart celebrates completed at a reception with students, families, teachers, and ARTsmart volunteers.

We look forward to resuming this tradition in the 2021-2022 school year.

ARTsmart Children’s Painted PLATE Project

More than 1,000 fifth-grade SFPS students participate in this annual program of creating paintings for placemats whose themes are inspired by their SFPS art teachers. The ARTsmart Board selects approximately 100 of the placemat designs to be reproduced on kiln-fired ceramics. Students transfer and paint their designs on a variety of objects, including large and small plates, bowls, vases, and platters.

Each student creates two objects—one to keep and another that is auctioned at the ARTsmart Annual Dinner & Auction to raise funds for our Visiting Artist Program. The laminated placemats are used at place settings during ARTsmart events, and attendees are encouraged to take them home. In 2020 and 2021 we offer the ceramics for sale online rather than at an in-person auction.
