ARTsmart President Martine Bertin-Peterson announced that Kathy Whitworth has agreed to host the nonprofit’s first charity golf tournament. The ARTsmart Golf Tournament takes place Sunday, October 2, 2011, at the renowned Towa Golf Club at the Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort & Spa at Buffalo Thunder. Proceeds from the tournament fund art programs, mentors, and scholarships for Santa Fe youth.
CELEBRITY HOST. “We are incredibly excited that Kathy Whitworth will be hosting the tournament and doing a clinic prior to it,” states Chairman James Bottorff. “Kathy is a hall of famer, who has 88 career wins, which is an all-time record for both men’s and women’s U.S. tours.” Born in Monahans, Texas, Whitworth began playing golf at age 15 and won the 1957 and 1958 New Mexico State Amateur championships. She became professional at age 19 and joined the LPGA in 1958, where she won six majors and was named LPGA Player of the Year seven times. In 1981, she was the first woman to reach career earnings of $1 million on the LPGA Tour.
SCHEDULE. The tournament entry fee covers a foursome scramble beginning at 12:30 pm at the 36-hole Towa course designed by Hale Irwin and Bill Phillips. Contests include Men’s/Women’s Longest Drive, Hole in One, Putting, and “Big Break.” Also included is dinner, awards ceremony, and auction at the Towa Clubhouse Grill Room with entertainment by the Bill Hearne Trio. Silent and live auction packages include a fly fishing trip, hot-air balloon ride, paintings by Chuck Pabst and John Oteri, and a set of 12 unique dinner plates created by Eldorado Elementary students on the theme of M.C. Escher’s tessellation.
ENTRY FEES. Single player $125 (additional dinner guest $25), Foursome $500, Foursome with Hole Sponsor $900, and Hole Sponsor $400.
