ARTsmart Teams Up with the Museum of Encaustic Art for Benefit
Join us on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 5-7 pm, at the Museum of Encaustic Art (MoEA), Santa Fe. Sponsored by the Encaustic Art Institute, the evening includes great art, photography and a silent auction, accompanied by champagne and nibbles. Both ARTsmart and the museum’s children’s art education center benefit from sales. Photographs by Guy Cross, founder and retired publisher of THE magazine, are showcased along with more than 50 artworks by photographers and artists Cross has collected. You’ll also learn about encaustic, an archival medium that uses heat to fuse layers of beeswax and dammar resin with pigment to create optically stunning surfaces. Many thanks to MoEA founder/artist Douglas Mehrens for his continued support of ARTsmart. Tickets are $25/person (MoEA members free) and may be purchased at the door (632 Agua Fria St.) or HERE.

ARTsmart Hosts Visiting Artists Open House
In early October, professional artists and Santa Fe Public School (SFPS) art teachers convened in the ARTsmart Community Studio to kick off the 2017-18 ARTsmart Visiting Artist Program. The artists shared their talents and ideas for classes offered to elementary students. For more than six years, ARTsmart has funded this program for which the artists create lesson plans, supply materials, and teach hands-on artmaking during “mini-residencies” in SFPS classrooms.
As noted by art teacher Elaine Kidd at Ramirez Thomas Elementary: ARTsmart’s Visiting Artist Program makes a difference in the lives of my students, 85 percent of whom are Central American immigrants or first-generation Americans. When I brought Marines Perez from Guatemala to the classroom, my students learned about textile arts. But they also developed a pride in their cultural heritage, which can be suppressed as they assimilate into American culture. When Gasali Adeyemo from Nigeria taught my students about the traditional craft of batik, we also talked about immigration from an international perspective and the contributions that immigrants make to our community. I and the children thank you!
Meet the Artist: Aisha
Aisha is a second grader who loves “to be creative” during ARTclub. She has enjoyed the program since kindergarten and is very proud of the Dia de Los Muertos sugar skull she made for the upcoming holiday: “I learned to transfer my drawing onto tin and then how to emboss it,” she says, adding that ARTclub makes her “feel happy and re-energized.” When asked about her preferred art medium she says that “collage is my favorite because you can put many things together that are beautiful.”
