10 NOVEMBER 2007. SANTA FE, NM. ARTsmart, which organizes and produces the annual ARTfeast weekend fundraiser with the Santa Fe Gallery Association, announces that $90,000 will be donated to the Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) on Wednesday, November 14, 2007.

“We are extremely pleased to increase our annual donation by ten thousand dollars over our 2006 donation,” said Mary Harbour, president of the ARTsmart Board of Directors, adding that “the total ARTsmart donation during the past decade is $476,278.”

Presentation of the check to SFPS Superintendent Leslie Carpenter takes place at 5:00 pm in the City Council Chambers of Santa Fe City Hall at 200 Lincoln Avenue. The public is welcome to attend.

Harbour explained that the largest portion of the donation goes directly to the SFPS system to purchase art supplies for the elementary art program. Additionally, monies fund a variety of art projects and scholarships sponsored by ARTsmart in conjunction with SFPS art teachers. (For distribution details go to About.)

“We work closely with the art teachers in the schools to fund projects that are exciting to both the children and the teachers,” Harbour continued. “This year, our ‘I Made It!’ Plates & Placemats project for fifth and sixth graders almost doubled the number of plates selected and fired by including several plate sets inspired by themes the art teachers came up with to stimulate their students’ creativity. In addition, our honorary artist, sculptor Roxanne Swentzell, is mentoring high school ceramics students who will craft masks, and once again, we are working with SFPS teacher Al Trujillo’s welding class, this time with Santa Fe ironsmith/sculptor Christopher Thomson to build sculptures.”

During ARTfeast 2008, the plates, masks, and sculptures will be auctioned to the highest bidders. The "Art Talks" acrylic paintings and original note cards will also be for sale. Purchasers join with ARTfeast underwriters, contributors, and ticket holders in benefiting arts education for Santa Fe’s youth.
